Guest Lecture - Evie’s (@eebeegames) Session on Basic Vocal Improvement for Vtuber

Singing Techniques, Skills, and Exercises: A Summary and Resource Guide

This post is a summary of key takeaways from Evie’s (@eebeegames) session on vocal improvement, and we’re excited to share it with every aspiring VTuber who wants to incorporate singing into their content. Whether you’re preparing for cover songs or karaoke streams, these tips will help you enhance your vocal performance.

Breath Control

  • Phonation : This is the process of your vocal folds vibrating together to produce sound. For proper breath control, focus on breathing from your belly or pelvic floor to avoid strain.
  • Key Tips :
    • Breathe from your diaphragm, and push out as you exhale.
    • Keep your jaw relaxed and your tongue down for smooth airflow.
    • Lift your soft palate to improve resonance and support.

  Posture

  • Good posture is essential for vocal performance. Keep your back straight, avoid bending your knees, relax your shoulders, and maintain a forward-facing head position.

Breathing Exercises

  • Hissing/Sss/Shh : These exercises help restrict airflow and strengthen your lungs.
  • Staccato/Legato : Practice short, choppy staccato and long, connected legato notes to build diaphragm support.

Diction

  • Diction refers to how you shape your mouth while singing, focusing mainly on vowels. To allow sound to resonate fully, de-emphasize consonants and maintain consistency across languages.

Exercises:

  • "Mommy Made Me Mash My M&M’s" : This descending scale exercise assists with vowel formation.
  • 12345 : A number-based scale practice that uses an octave to build intervals and make words "singable."

Register Support and Transitions

  • Chest Voice : Used for lower pitches, below the vocal break.
  • Head Voice : Engaged for higher pitches, above the vocal break.
  • Vocal Break/Passagio : The transition between chest and head voice.
  • Belting : Belting uses a mix of both registers to produce powerful singing, requiring good neck relaxation and proper support.

Exercises :

  - **Arpeggios**: Practice scales by jumping between Do-Mi-Sol-High Do.

  - **Interval Training**: Focus on wider jumps between notes (e.g., 4ths and 5ths).

  - **Belting Workout**: Practice nasal sounds and slides to strengthen your belting technique.

Confidence, Style, and Phrasing

  • To avoid tension while singing, keep your shoulders down, and remember that singing should never hurt.
  • Phrasing: Adjust how you sing different sections of a song by varying volume, articulation, and register.

How to Practice

  • Break your practice into smaller sections by focusing on lyrics, pitch, diction, and phrasing.
  • Take notes during practice sessions, color-code registers, and mark breath points in your sheet music to create a structured practice routine.

Warm-Up Exercises

  • Warm-ups should target the hardest parts of your current song. Exercises like scales, sirens, lip trills, and yawns will help loosen your vocal cords and prepare your voice for more demanding singing.

By mastering these core techniques and regularly practicing the provided exercises, you can greatly improve your vocal strength and performance. Keep experimenting with new styles and always stay mindful of your body’s responses as you sing!
